When someone in Kenya searches for “mechanic near me”, “dentist in Kilimani” or “hardware in Thika”, the first results they see are usually a map with three businesses on it. Those businesses got there through a Google Business Profile in Kenya, a free listing anyone can set up. This guide shows how to get your business on Google in Kenya: create and verify your profile, fill it in so Google trusts it, collect reviews the right way, and connect it to your website so you show up in both the map and the normal results.
What a Google Business Profile in Kenya is and why it matters
A Google Business Profile, previously called Google My Business, is the listing that appears on Google Maps and in the map section of search results. It shows your business name, location, phone number, hours, photos and reviews, with buttons to call, get directions or visit your website.
For local businesses it is often the single most valuable free marketing tool available. Customers searching with a location or “near me” are usually ready to buy, and the map results take up the top of the page on a phone. A complete, active profile with good reviews is how you get into that top three.
How to set up and verify your Google Business Profile in Kenya
- Search for your business first on Google Maps. If a listing already exists, claim it rather than creating a duplicate.
- Go to business.google.com and sign in with a Google account the business controls. Use a business email, not a staff member’s personal account.
- Enter your business name exactly as customers know it, without adding keywords or locations that are not part of the real name. Stuffing the name breaks Google’s rules and can get the profile suspended.
- Choose your primary category carefully, such as “Website designer”, “Dental clinic” or “Car repair and maintenance”. It has a big effect on which searches you appear for.
- Add your location or service area. If customers visit you, add the address and drop the pin accurately. If you go to customers, such as a plumber or cleaning company, set a service area and hide the address.
- Add your phone number and website.
- Verify the profile. Google may ask for a video of your premises, signage and proof of business, a phone or email code, or occasionally a postcard. Follow the steps exactly; verification can take a few days.

Ten ways to optimise your Google Business Profile in Kenya
- Fill in every field: hours, holiday hours, services, products, attributes and the business description.
- Write a clear description of what you do, where and for whom, in plain language. Mention the areas you serve naturally, for example “serving Nairobi, Kiambu and Machakos”.
- Add secondary categories for other services you genuinely offer.
- List your services with prices or starting prices where possible.
- Upload real photos of your premises, team, products and finished work. Add new ones every month.
- Post updates weekly using Google Posts: offers, new products, recent projects or tips.
- Answer questions in the Q&A section, and add common questions yourself.
- Keep your details consistent. Your name, address and phone number should match your website, Facebook page and directory listings exactly.
- Turn on messaging or add WhatsApp if you can reply quickly.
- Keep hours accurate, especially over public holidays. Customers who arrive to a closed door leave bad reviews.

Getting more Google reviews
Reviews affect both where you rank and whether people call. The number, how recent they are, and how you respond all matter.
- Ask every happy customer, right after the job or purchase, while the experience is fresh.
- Make it easy. Copy the “Ask for reviews” link from your profile and send it on WhatsApp or SMS, or print a QR code for your counter.
- Ask for detail. Encourage customers to mention what you did and where, for example “they fixed my car’s gearbox in Westlands”. Specific reviews help both readers and rankings.
- Reply to every review, good or bad, politely and within a few days. For a complaint, apologise, explain how you are fixing it and move the conversation offline.
- Never buy reviews or offer rewards for them. Google removes fake reviews and can penalise the profile.
Aim for a steady flow, such as a few new reviews each month, rather than a burst followed by nothing.
Why you still need a website
A Google Business Profile and a website work best together. The profile gets you into the map results; the website gives Google, and your customers, the detail the profile cannot hold.
- Google uses your website to understand your business. A site with a page for each service and clear mention of your town helps your profile rank for more searches.
- Customers check your website before they call. Many tap the website button on your profile to see prices, photos of past work and whether you look established.
- The website ranks in the normal results too, so you can appear twice on the same page.
- You own it. Profiles can be suspended or edited by others; your website is yours.
If you do not have a website yet, see our guide to small business website design in Kenya or our website design service. If you have one that gets little response, read why your website is not getting customers.
Google Business Profile mistakes that hold Kenyan businesses back
- Letting a staff member or former developer own the profile. Make sure the business owner’s account is the primary owner.
- Wrong pin location, which sends customers to the wrong building or road.
- Duplicate listings created by different staff, which split your reviews and confuse Google.
- Keyword-stuffed business names such as “Best Plumber Nairobi Cheap Plumbing Services”. This is a common reason for suspension.
- Different phone numbers on your profile, website and social pages.
- Setting it up and forgetting it. Profiles with no new photos, posts or reviews gradually slip down.
Frequently asked questions
Is a Google Business Profile free in Kenya?
Yes. Creating, verifying and managing a Google Business Profile is completely free. Be wary of anyone charging only for “listing you on Google”.
How long does it take to appear on Google Maps?
Once verified, a profile usually appears within a few days. Ranking in the top three for competitive searches takes longer and depends on completeness, reviews, your website and your distance from the searcher.
Can I have a Google Business Profile without a physical shop?
Yes. Service businesses that visit customers can set a service area and hide their address. You still need a real business and must pass verification.
How do I get more Google reviews?
Ask every satisfied customer soon after the job, send them your review link on WhatsApp or SMS, and reply to every review. Never buy reviews or offer incentives for them.
Do I still need a website if I have a Google Business Profile?
Yes. Your website helps your profile rank, lets customers see prices and past work before calling, and can appear in the normal search results as well as the map.
Why was my Google Business Profile suspended?
Common causes are keywords added to the business name, an address that is not a real staffed location, duplicate listings, or details that do not match your website. Fix the issue and request reinstatement through Google’s support form.
